Chip Wars: Intel, AMD make gains

Intel (NSDQ:INTC) picked up about a point of microprocessor market share in the global market over the previous quarter, while x86 rival Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) gained more than two points year-over-year, according to Q1 2008 revenue numbers released Tuesday by technology research firm iSuppli.

Intel, headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., remained the overwhelming leader in global microprocessor revenue for Q1 with 79.7 percent of the market, defined by El Segundo, Calif.-based iSuppli as comprising general-purpose Intel Architecture (IA) or x86 chips as well as those based on RISC and other non-IA architectures.

Semiconductor sales up 5.9% in April

Semiconductor sales grew 5.9 percent worldwide in April, a healthy clip given the current sluggish economy, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported Monday.

Chip sales rose to $21.2 billion in April, up from $20.1 billion a year ago and flat with the previous month.

The SIA noted April sales were essentially in line with historical industry patterns. "Despite steep increases in energy costs that have diminished the disposable income of consumers, worldwide sales of semiconductors grew by a healthy 5.9 percent compared to April 2007," George Scalise, SIA president, said in a statement.

Ballmer: Vista A Work In Progress

Microsoft's CEO admits what thousands of techies have thought of the company for years: they toss stuff into the user community and need a couple of additional releases to make it work.

Vista isn't finished yet. That's not another hack writer's opinion, but an assessment of the operating system from the man who runs the company. Steve Ballmer made an admission about Vista that, in the wake of internal emails at Microsoft criticizing the product, really serves as a footnote to the kerfuffle.

Is Microsoft Playing Games With XP SP3?

Microsoft Extend's Windows XP Deadline

Microsoft will announce later today that it will give OEMs six additional months to sell PCs with Windows XP installed, CRN has learned.
Microsoft is extending the deadline for sales of new direct OEM PCs with Windows XP installed from January 31, 2008 to June 30, 2008, according to sources close to the company.

"The named accounts, the ones that have volume, have complained about the end of life for XP, and that's because adoption of Windows Vista has been slow," said one Microsoft partner who requested anonymity. "This is a pretty important development for larger partners, and it's also somewhat surprising because it shows that they've been listening to us."

Rip And Replace Vista With XP

..while Vista comes pre-installed on new systems, many customers don't want it.

That leaves integrators with unenviable task of ripping Vista off of new systems and replacing it with the customer's operating system of choice, in most cases Windows XP. While that process is far from an impossible task, it does come with complications, ranging from expending time, to locating drivers, to sorting out licenses.

The benchmark war: AMD vs. Intel

The last few weeks have seen a certain amount of name calling going on between some key AMD executives and people from, or representing, Intel. As I understand it, this all started whan some AMD people got upset because the press was buying into Intel's claim to have delivered a quad core CPU when, in reality, all they've done is package two dual cores together.

PCWorld.com was not the least bit selective about their articles, seemingly forgetting that they are a PC magazine. The dozens of articles about cell phones, VOIP, HD TVs, etc. may be of interest to many, but I weeded out all that I felt were of limited interest to computer resellers and was left with the list below. Two friends will be returning from CES this weekend and I hope to soon have more to post.  - Hank Castello
